Young Winegrape grower IDO heads to Canberra to present on future of Murray Darling Basin Young Murray Valley Winegrowers’ Industry Development Officer Liz Singh is one of four emerging industry leaders selected to take part in the Voices of the Future Irrigated Industries Mentoring Program for 2010. Liz will represent the winegrape industry on a visit to Canberra over 28 and 29 April where she will be joined and mentored by Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay on visits to policy makers, industry leaders, the NFF and Government officials. The Irrigated Industries Mentoring Program is the third stage of the Voices of the Future initiative which saw young irrigators from across the cotton, rice, dairy and grape and wine industries come together to build leadership skills and discuss ideas regarding the future of the Murray Darling Basin from their own industry’s perspective. The Mentoring Program includes small group leadership activities as well as the development of a presentation to Government and an action plan for sharing information and desired outcomes in respect of each irrigated industry. Liz said she was looking forward to her visit to Canberra. “The visit to Canberra presents a great leadership development opportunity and I’m excited to be involved and represent the winegrape industry. “It’s great to have someone like Adam on board to encourage our involvement and to know that there is a pathway to communicate our industry’s key issues back to decision makers,” said Liz. Cotton Australia CEO Adam Kay will accompany Liz on her visits and said he was excited by this next step in the Voices of the Future Program. “The mentoring stage of this program is a fantastic initiative and I’m honoured to be able to assist where I can in further developing Liz’s leadership potential in the winegrape industry. “Where the future of the Murray Darling Basin is being discussed it is vital that the young people who are the future of their industry are represented and their ideas and solutions are heard.

A recently received report claims locust plagues will be a significant threat to our region. The Australian Plague Locust Commission report says locust density in the central and north east regions have increased since mid march, with fears the that immigration of the species from NSW will pose a very real threat to early cereal and fodder crops.Any locust findings can be reported on 1300 135 559.
